Depending on what part of the body is affected, signs and symptoms of cancer can vary. Some of the general signs and symptoms can include:
- Fatigue
- Fever
- Lump or thickening under the skin
- Pain
- Weight changes
- Skin changes
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits
- Persistent cough
- Difficulty swallowing
- Hoarseness
- Persistent indigestion or discomfort after eating
If you have any signs or symptoms that are worrying you, discuss your concerns with your doctor. Ask your doctor which cancer screening tests and procedures are appropriate for you. Breast, cervical, colon and prostate cancers are all commonly screened for. If you are diagnosed with cancer, treatment can include chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery among others.
Though there is no certain way to prevent cancer, there are ways to reduce your risk:
- Stop smoking
- Use sun screen and limit your time in the sun
- Eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise
- Maintain a healthy body weight
