Asthma Health Care Information

Asthma makes breathing difficult for more than three million Canadians. It occurs when the airways in your lungs become inflamed and constricted. Signs and symptoms of asthma range from mild to severe and can include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness or pain
  • Asthma attack (extreme difficulty breathing)

Though there is currently no cure for asthma, its symptoms can be relieved through long-term control medications, as well as quick-relief medications, usually taken with hand-held inhalers.

You can also take steps on your own to reduce your exposure to things that trigger asthma symptoms:

  • Use your air conditioner to keep pollen outside.
  • Keep your indoor air clean by dusting and cleaning regularly.
  • Keep pet dander at a minimum by bathing and grooming often.
  • Use dust-proof covers for pillows and mattresses.
  • Remove carpeting and stick with wood, tile or lino for your flooring

With asthma, it’s also very important to keep up with your exercise. Regular physical activity can strengthen your heart and lungs, which can help relieve asthma symptoms. Try your best to maintain a healthy weight, which will also help reduce asthma symptoms.
